My first Sun Basket arrived in the middle of the day on an unseasonably hot September afternoon. Since I had the Fed Ex Delivery Manager set up, I knew when the box arrived and I stopped home as soon as I could to unbox and get all of the ingredients into the refrigerator.
My delivery of 3 meals for 2 people came in a modestly sized cardboard box which was easy for me to lift and carry to my second story apartment.
Opening the box was easily done with an exacto blade to cut the tape keeping it shut. The top of the box lifts to reveal a cheerful message reminding you to recycle as well as reminding you to refrigerate all of the contents “pronto”!
Before the first layer of packaging material is the recipe book which is full of beautiful photos and easy-to-follow directions. Also included are special stickers with instructions on how to recycle the paper insulation batting.
As I lifted the first layer of paper insulation, I could feel the cool air escaping from the packaging. I am amazed that they were able to sufficiently insulate the package entirely with recyclable materials!
Each meal’s ingredients were separated into a paper bag with the label of the meal on it. My first subasket delivery included three meals that I selected: Steak salad with romesco vinaigrette, Lemongrass chicken stir-fry with baby broccoli and jasmine rice, and Mediterranean quinoa salad with ras el hanout-rosted vegetables.
Under the 3 bags was a cardboard divider -also recyclable!
The next layer included the two proteins for my meals – beef tip sirloin steaks and diced chicken thighs which were directly on the ice pack.
In the bottom of the box, was the still-cold ice pack. Another amazing feat – a completely recyclable ice pack! It is made of water and non-GMO cotton and the contents can be composted.
All of the ingredients in my box fit on a half shelf of my refrigerator to be easily pulled out during the week.
